Southampton Football Club is an English football club, nicknamed The Saints, based in the city of Southampton, Hampshire, that currently competes in the Premier League.
The 2016–17 Southampton F.C. season is the club's 18th season in the Premier League and their 40th in the top division of English football. In addition to the Premier League, the club will also compete in the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Europa League. The season is the club's first with manager Claude Puel, who took over from the departed Ronald Koeman on 30 June 2016.
Following the end of the 2015–16 season, Southampton released Will Britt and Gastón Ramírez, while Kelvin Davis retired. The club also sold Spanish forward Juanmi to Real Sociedad, Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama to Tottenham Hotspur, Senegalese winger Sadio Mané to Liverpool for a club record fee, and Italian striker Graziano Pellè to Chinese club Shandong Luneng. Defender Jason McCarthy was sent out on loan to Walsall for the first half of the season.
In the summer transfer window, the Saints signed winger Nathan Redmond from Norwich City and Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg from Bayern Munich.
